The Ultimate Toothpaste Guide

Have you been wondering what kind of toothpaste is best for you and your family?  Everyone wants to have a healthy smile, and choosing the right toothpaste can be your first step toward preserving those pearly whites.  At Absolute Smile, we help all of our clients find the best toothpaste and home-care tools that they need.  With a little bit of guidance, you can start to understand the ins and outs of toothpaste selection just like a pro.

When it comes to toothpaste, there can be a lot of information to sift through, but at Absolute Smile we’ve created the ultimate toothpaste guide to help you choose the best toothpaste for your individual needs.  You’ll want to consider the types of toothpaste on the market so that you can make an informed decision.  At Absolute Smile, we do our best to ensure that everyone understands the differences among the many toothpastes out there.

Toothpastes come in all forms.  There’s paste, gel and powder.  The most common on the market are pastes and gels.  These are also the easier kinds to find stocked on the shelves.  At Absolute Smile, we like to educate our clients and let them know that not all toothpaste is created with the same standards of quality and many of the toothpastes that you find in the bigger box food stores aren’t carried in some of the smaller, local health-food stores.

Tarter control toothpaste is one of the most popular.  This kind of toothpaste is a good choice for those who are trying to prevent tarter buildup from accumulating on their teeth.  Tarter control toothpaste works by breaking down plaque on teeth before it hardens and becomes resistant to removal.  What some people don’t know is that tarter control toothpaste does little to prevent tarter accumulation beneath the gum line.

Toothpaste for sensitive teeth is a good choice if you experience sensitivity while eating hot or cold foods.  Toothpaste made for sensitive teeth is generally less abrasive then other kinds and usually lists potassium nitrate or strontium chloride in its ingredients.  These toothpastes are usually found at both food store and health-food stores.

Whitening toothpastes are another popular type.  Most of these kinds of toothpastes have abrasive ingredients that work to basically sand off stains on the teeth.  Some brands use peroxide as their whitening agent.  Some whitening toothpastes result in tooth sensitivity, so if you do opt to choose a whitening toothpaste, be aware of this potential effect.  At Absolute Smile, we can help you determine which kind of toothpaste might work best for you.

Children benefit from having their own kind of toothpaste.  Toddler can use a toothpaste that is safe for them to swallow, and then a regular children toothpaste as they get a little bit older.  In general, most children’s toothpastes have sweeter flavors and less, or no fluoride.
